Display of system event logs: clear, compact and cost-effective

The IBYKUS EventLogChecker 1.5 (ELC) is a new program for system administrators that displays event logs in a form that is both compact and clear. And that's not just for single servers or PCs. The ELC enables system administrators to monitor the event logs of up to 50 servers/PCs simultaneously.

The ELC is intended for system administrators with little previous experience with event logs, who tend to handle the administration "on the side", and have previously merely read through the event logs manually.

Clarity is achieved by using sorting mechanisms and filters. For example, these enable an administrator to hide known, frequently recurring events. This makes it easier to see the really important events.

Principle of Operation:

A service is installed on each server and PC that is to be monitored. This registers locally occurring events, and logs them in a central database (Microsoft Access or Microsoft SQL Server).

A configuration file on each monitored computer defines which events are logged (e.g. errors and warnings only). The configuration is generated by the installation program, and can be adapted at any later time with the client component "elc.exe".

The database can be stored in any desired location. It merely has to be ensured that the rights are set so that all the client and server components involved have the appropriate access. ELC 1.5 reads this data out, and displays it in tabular form. Various sorted and filtered views can be defined (see above).br />
Another highlight: The dynamic commands in the context menu of the display enable the meaning of an event ID to be looked up in the Internet. The following have to be installed on a workstation in order to use the executable file of the ELC 1.5 ("elc.exe"):

- DotNET Framework 1.1
- Microsoft Data Access Components - MDAC (version 2.63 or higher)

The ELC tool reads out this data, and displays it in tabular form. Various sorted and filtered views can be defined for display. The dynamic commands in the context menu enable information about events to be looked up in the Internet.

An administrator can use a filter to hide known, frequently recurring events. This makes it easier for the administrator to see the important events.

Compatible databases:
  • Microsoft SQL-Server
  • Microsoft Access
